Lenovo's IdeaPad U1 Hybrid is two computers in one

Lenovo
The IdeaPad U1 Hybrid from Lenovo is arguably the coolest gadget at the Consumer Electronics Show.
The IdeaPad U1 gives users both a laptop and a tablet in one. Here's how: When the screen and keyboard base are attached the computers works as a 3.8 pound Windows 7 laptop running on a CULV Intel Core 2 Duo processor.
But when you detach the 11.6 inch HD screen, that portion becomes a 1.6 pound tablet running on Lenovo's Skylight linux operating system

Windows Phone 7

Microsoft won't allow UI mods on Windows Phone 7. That hasn't stopped HTC from bringing their trademarked Sense UI feel to WP7 though - instead of replacing the homescreen outright, they added apps that replicate a lot of current Sense UI's features.
This videos could potentially be a fake - but a lot of work went into it, too much for an Internet prank. If they are real though, Sense enabled Windows Phone 7 from HTC will raise eye-candy to levels seen only in prototypes.
Here's the first video - everything happens with smooth 3D animations. Everything. The notes application is wonderfully ornate and the weather app adds fly through clouds animation to the already elaborate setup.

Some of the apps look like cute toys - like the "Loves me, loves me not" game and that app with the flashlight icon (they don't show it, but what could it be other than a flashlight app).
As cool as those animations are (and they are very cool), on a day to day basis they'll probably become an irritating delay more than a feature. Most likely they can be turned off, when you get bored with them. Oh, and was that copy and paste support we saw? Windows Phone 7 doesn't have one usually.

How to Make Custom iPhone Themes

You can download iPhone themes from your PC to your iPhone. You can download iPhone themes from your PC to your iPhone.
computer image by peter Hires Images from Fotolia.com
Themes are created to personalize your handset. IPhones give you the ability to change the wallpaper, sounds, icons and dock. There are preset themes on your iPhone, but you can choose your own personal themes. You can set the theme on any iPhone no matter what network you have purchased it from.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

  1. Go to the iPhone theme generator at iphonethemegenerator.com. (See Reference.)
  2. Click "Upload wallpaper" and select the picture file you want to use as your iPhone wallpaper. This can be a Jpeg. or Bitmap (Btm) File. After selecting the file you want, click "OK" or "Open." A full-screen version of your picture should appear on the mock iPhone on the screen. You may also choose options from the iphonethemegenerator library by clicking "Select From Gallery."
  3. Change the onscreen icons. Click each icon individually and select whether you want a personalized icon from their gallery or one from you own PC. If you are choosing from the online gallery, click the icon of your choice twice. If you are selecting it from your PC, click "Upload from PC" and then select the icon before clicking "Open."
  4. Click "Upload" under the option "Dock" to change your iPhone's dock. It will open your computer file. Find the file that houses the picture of your choice and double-click it. To choose from the online gallery, click "Select From Gallery."
  5. Click "Upload" under the "Status Bar" icon. This will open your PC's folder. Next, select the folder and file you want and click "Open." If you wish to use photos from the online gallery, click "Select From Gallery."
  6. Click "Compile Theme." Click the sentence that reads "Click Here to Download Your Theme."
  7. Click "Allow" on the status bar. Save the theme to your PC.
  8. Upload this theme to your iPhone via Bluetooth or USB. It should go into the folder that reads "/var/root/Library/SummerBoard/Themes/."

Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab goes official, has phone functionality

The Tab has landed - the Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab tablet just went official, confirming many of its rumored specs. The 7" tablet has full voice call functionality, up to 7 hours of video playback, DivX and Flash videos included and the excellent Android web browser that has plenty of room to stretch its legs on the WSVGA screen.

Official photos of the Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab
The Samsung Galaxy Tab is centered around a 7" TFT screen with 1024x600 pixels resolution, driven by a Cortex-A8 processor running at 1GHz, 512MB RAM and PowerVR SGX540 graphics.

Hands-on photos of the Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab
The OS running the show is Android 2.2 Froyo, of course, but without the TouchWiz skin. Samsung have concentrated on providing and excellent app package instead.
The Tab has GSM/GPRS/EDGE along with HSPA-enhanced 3G connectivity. Both for voice and data, SMS and MMS too. It even has a front-facing 1.3MP camera for video calls. On the back, there's a second camera - a 3MP auto-focus snapper with LED flash.
The Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab is big for a phone but compact for a 7" tablet, it measures 190.1 x 120.5 x 11.98mm and weighs 380g. The reduced weight compared to the iPad is in part due to the smaller size and because the Tab has a plastic body.

More photos of the Samsung Galaxy Tab
There are two options for the built-in memory - 16GB or 32GB, which is expandable using microSD cards up to 32GB. The connectivity of the Samsung Galaxy Tab is rounded off by Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi b/g/n and an Apple-like 30 pin data connector.

And an HDMI will come in handy - the extensive video codec support (DivX, XviD, H.264, Flash 10.1 too) and the 4000 mAh battery that has enough juice for up to 7 hours of movies. The tab handles HD resolutions with ease too.
Samsung have added the Readers Hub, which boasts access to 2 million books and thousands of magazines and newspapers, joining on the tablet assault on eReaders. If the apps that come preloaded on the Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab aren't enough, you have full access to the Android market. We're not sure whether most apps there would be fit for the Tab's 1024x600 pixel resolution.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab will launch in Europe in mid-September (Italy first) and expand to the US, Asia and Korea in the months to follow.

Nokia C7 leaks again… Still not official

You may have seen our post last week about the Nokia C7 video leak, which didn’t really gives up much in the way of specs. Well, it would seem that the Nokia C7 has now winged it’s way into the hands of Eldar Murtazin (Mobile Review) who is widely renowned as the guru of mobile phone leaks and is already high up on Nokia’s hit list (Google Eldar Murtazin and you’ll see what i mean.)
Despite (in spite of?) this, Mobile Review have posted a preview on the as yet, un-announced Nokia C7. Here’s what we know. The C7 is said to be a ‘Lite’ version of the Nokia N8 if you like, sporting a lower cost plastic chassis and an 8 megapixel camera and LED flash (vs. 12 megapixel and Xenon flash on the N8) The HDMI port has gone and the internal memory is said to have reduced to 8GB. Aside from the above, everything else is said to remain the same, a 3.5″ nHD AMOLED screen, 680MHz CPU, 256MB RAM, 1200 mAh battery and of course, the proprietary Symbian^3 and all of the usual connectivity options, Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) and Bluetooth 3.0.
Mobile Review have also estimated the cost of this stripped out handset at 350 Euros, 20 Euros cheaper than the Nokia N8. Well, i think we’ll wait for official announcement from Nokia but if that is the case, who would chose not to pay that little bit extra given how much more you get for your money? HTC Announces HTC Sense and the new HTC Hero

So today's highly anticipated launch revealed the HTC Hero Android phone as everyone suspected. That in itself would have been a bit of a let down since we've known and speculated about the Hero for some time. Hardware wise it's not a million miles away from previous HTC Android phones. Yes, it has a 5 megapixel camera and finally a 3.5mm stereo headset jack but that's not much to get excited about.
But the real news was the announcement of HTC Sense, a customisable UI for Android. Now that's something I can get excited about. Rather than try to explain it, I think the official press release does a pretty good job so here goes:
HTC Hero LONDON – June 24, 2009 – HTC Corporation, a global designer of mobile phones, today debuted HTC Sense™, an intuitive and seamless experience that will be introduced across a portfolio of phones beginning with the new HTC Hero™. With its distinct design and powerful capabilities fully integrated with HTC Sense, Hero introduces a unique blend of form and function that takes Android to new heights.
HTC Sense is focused on putting people at the centre, by making your phone work in a more simple and natural way. This experience revolves around three fundamental principles that were designed by quietly observing and listening to how people live and communicate.
'HTC Hero introduces a more natural way for reaching out to people and accessing your important information, not by following the status quo of today's phones, but by following how you communicate and live your life,' said Peter Chou, Chief Executive Officer, HTC Corporation. 'HTC Sense is a distinct experience created to make HTC phones more simple for people to use, leaving them saying, "it just makes sense."'
HTC Hero
HTC Hero continues HTC's leadership in cutting-edge design that focuses on introducing a variety of distinct devices to represent your own individuality. Boasting bevelled edges and an angled bottom, the HTC Hero is contoured to fit comfortably in your hand and against your face while you’re on a call. The HTC Hero is built to last, beginning with an anti-fingerprint screen coating for improved smudge-resistance and a longer-lasting, clearer display. The white HTC Hero includes an industry-first, Teflon coating, resulting in an improved, durable white surface that is soft to the touch.
With its 3.2-inch HVGA display, the HTC Hero is optimized for Web, multimedia and other content, while maintaining a small size and weight that fits comfortably in your hand. It also boasts a broad variety of hardware features including AGPS, digital compass, gravity-sensor, 3.5mm stereo headset jack, a five mega-pixel autofocus camera and expandable MicroSD memory. HTC Hero also includes a dedicated Search button that goes beyond basic search, providing you with a more natural, contextual search experience that enables you to search through Twitter, locate people in your contact list, find emails in your inbox or search in any other area in Hero.
HTC Sense
Built on a culture of innovation and a passion to enhance people's lives, HTC shapes the mobile experience around the individual. Debuting on the HTC Hero and available on all new HTC devices moving forward, Sense delivers on three basic principles: Make it Mine, Stay Close and Discover the Unexpected.
Make It Mine
Make It Mine is about feeling your HTC phone was created for and by you. To do this, HTC encourages you to dictate and organize how you want to access the people and content in your life in a way that fits best for you. For some, this means adding glance-view widgets that push content like twitter feeds, weather and other content to the surface while others may want quick access to business-focused information like email, calendar and world-times. HTC is also introducing a new profile feature called 'Scenes' that enables you to create different customized content profiles around specific functions or times in your life.
Stay Close
Today, staying in touch with the people in your life means managing a variety of communication channels and applications ranging from phone calls, emails, texts, photos, status updates and more. HTC Sense takes a different approach by integrating these communication channels and applications into one single view, enabling you to stay closer to your important people. With HTC Sense, friends' Facebook status updates and photos, along with their Flickr photos are included alongside their text messages, emails and call history in a single view.
Discover the Unexpected
Many of the most memorable moments in your life are experienced, not explained. HTC Sense is focused on providing a variety of these simple yet innovative experiences on your HTC phone that will sometimes bring you moments of joy and delight. It can be something as basic as turning the phone over to silence a ring or as simple as improving the smart dialler for making calls quicker. HTC Sense also includes 'Perspectives', a new way for viewing your content such as email, photos, Twitter, music and more in different ways.
Availability
The HTC Hero will be available to people across Europe in July and in Asia later in the summer. A distinct North American version will be available later in 2009.
------------------
I know that I haven't been too complimentary in the past about the look of HTC's Android phones and their chins and I also know that I really prefer to have a physical keyboard but you know what? I'd give up my G1 in a heartbeat for the Hero just to have HTC Sense.

4G Technologi in IPhone

While Apple may tinker with the final packaging and design of the final phone, it's clear that the features in this lost-and-found next-generation iPhone are drastically new and drastically different from what came before. Here's the detailed list of our findings:

What's new

• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It's unclear if it's the 960x640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the "Connect to iTunes" screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What's changed

• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery

How it was lost

Here is a detailed account of how the phone was lost.

Why we think it's definitely real

We're as skeptical—if not more—than all of you. We get false tips all the time. But after playing with it for about a week—the overall quality feels exactly like a finished final Apple phone—and disassembling this unit, there is so much evidence stacked in its favor, that there's very little possibility that it's a fake. In fact, the possibility is almost none. Imagine someone having to use Apple components to design a functioning phone, from scratch, and then disseminating it to people around the world. Pretty much impossible. Here are the reasons, one by one.
It has been reported lost
Apple-connected John Gruber—from Daring Fireball—says that Apple has indeed lost a prototype iPhone and they want it back:
So I called around, and I now believe this is an actual unit from Apple — a unit Apple is very interested in getting back.
Obviously someone found it, and here it is.
The screen
While we couldn't get it past the connect to iTunes screen for the reasons listed earlier, the USB cable on that screen was so high quality that it was impossible to discern individual pixels. We can't tell you the exact resolution of this next-generation iPhone, but it's much higher than the current iPhone 3GS.
The operating system
According to the person who found it, this iPhone was running iPhone OS 4.0 before the iPhone 4.0 announcement. The person was able to play with it and see the iPhone 4.0 features. Then, Apple remotely killed the phone before we got access to it. We were unable to restore because each firmware is device specific—3GS firmware only loads on 3GS devices—and the there are no firmwares available for this unreleased phone. Which is another clue to its authenticity.
It is recognized as an iPhone
This iPhone behaves exactly like an iPhone does when connected to a computer, with the proper boot sequence and "connect to iTunes" restore functionality. Xcode and iTunes both see this as an iPhone. Mac OS X's System Profiler also reports this as an iPhone in restore mode, which is a natural consequence of remotely wiping the phone, but report different product identifiers (both CPID and CPRV) than either the 3G or the 3GS.
It uses micro-sim
The fact that it uses a micro-sim is a clear indicator that this is a next-generation iPhone. No other cellphone uses this standard at this point in the US.
This Is Apple's Next iPhoneThe camouflage case
The case it came inside was a fully developed plastic case to house this phone to disguise it like a 3GS. This wasn't just a normal case; it had all the proper new holes cut out for the new switches and ports and camera holes and camera flash. But it looks like something from Belkin or Case-Mate. It's a perfect disguise.
The fact that it's in the wild right now
Logic can also narrow down why this phone is this year's iPhone, rather than next year's model or one from the previous year's, just because it was found in the wild right now. It makes no sense for Apple to be testing 2011's model right now, in super finished form—they wouldn't be nearly finished with it. The phone also can't be last year's test model, because last year's model (based on the iPhone 3GS teardowns) components were way different. No micro-sim, much bigger logic board, no flash, no front camera, smaller battery and an inferior camera. That only leaves the 2010 model.
This Is Apple's Next iPhoneThe guts, the definitive proof
And finally, when we opened it up, we saw multiple components that were clearly labeled APPLE. And, because the components were fit extremely well and extremely conformed inside the case (obvious that it was designed FOR this case), it was evident that it was not just a 3G or a 3GS transplanted into another body. That probably wouldn't even be possible, with the size constraints of the thinner device and larger battery.

The New Industrial Design

At first sight, this new iPhone's industrial design seems so different from the previous two generations that it could be discarded as just a provisional case. Even while the finish is so perfect that it feels right out of the factory, some of the design language elements that are common to all Apple products are not there. Gone is the flushed screen glass against the metal rim. Gone is the single volume button, replaced by two separate ones. Gone is the seamless rim, and gone are the tapered, curved surfaces.
Despite that, however, this design is not a departure. Not when you frame it with the rest of the Apple product line. It's all the contrary: This new iPhone gets back to the simplicity of the iMac and the iPad. In fact, you can argue that the current iPhone 3GS—with its shiny chrome rim and excessively curved back—is out of place compared to the hard edges and Dieter-Ramish utilitarianism of the iMac and the iPad. Next to the iPad, for example, the new iPhone makes sense. It has the same feeling, the same functional simplicity.
But why the black plastic back, instead of going with an unibody aluminum design? Why the two audio volume buttons? Why the seams? And why doesn't the back have any curvature at all?
This Is Apple's Next iPhone
Why the plastic back?
The plastic back is the most obvious of the design choices. The iPad, with its all aluminum back, has seen its Wi-Fi reception radius reduced. The 3G version comes with a large patch on the top, probably big enough to provide with good reception. But the new tiny iPhone doesn't have the luxury of space: It needs to provide as much signal as possible using a very small surface. I'm sure Jon Ive is dying to get rid of the plastic back, and go iPad-style all the way, but the wireless reception is the most important thing in a cellphone. A necessary aesthetical-functional trade-off.
Why separate volume buttons?
This new iPhone uses separate buttons for the volume instead of the single button that you can find in the iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. It's one of the factors that may indicate that this is a provisional case, until you think about one of the most requested features for Apple's phone: A physical button for the camera. The new iPhone has a bigger sensor and a flash, which means that the camera function keeps gaining more weight. It's only logical to think that Apple may have implemented this two-button approach to provide with a physical shutter button. It makes sense.
Why the seams?
The seams are perhaps the most surprising aspect of the new design. They don't seem to respond to any aesthetic criteria and, in terms of function, we can't adventure any explanation. But they don't look bad. In fact, the whole effect seems good, like something you will find in a Braun product from the 70s.
It's doubtful that the seams are arbitrary, however. Either they will disappear from the final product, or they have a function we can't foresee at this time.
Why no tapering or curves?
As you will see in a future article, the new iPhone is so miniaturized and packed that there's no room for the tapered, curved surfaces. Everything is as tight as it could get, with no space for anything but electronics.

The hardware specs

The phone measures 4.50 by 2.31 by 0.37 inches. It weighs 140 grams. The 3GS weighs 137 grams on a postal scale (and 135 on Apple's official measurements). So, in comparison, it's 3 grams heavier. The battery is 5.25 WHr at 3.7V, compared to the 3GS battery, which is 4.51 WHr at 3.7V. On the back of the phone, it said it was XX GB, but since we were unable to get the phone to a running state, we couldn't see exactly how large it was.
This Is Apple's Next iPhone

How it feels

Freaking amazing. As a person who never really liked the round mound of a back in the 3GS, the sleeker, flatter, squarer design is super welcome. It feels sturdier than the 3GS, and much less plasticky. The metal buttons give it a heftier feel—less of a toy—than all previous generations. The closest analog to it would be the original iPhone, which is more square and heavy than its newer brothers.
It feels completely natural up to your face, and the fact that both the front and the back are glossy makes no difference on how well you can hold it without the phone slipping. And because it's thinner, it feels even nicer in your pants.
